Positive sophistication
+++++++++++++++++++
It may at first seem that cynicism is a sign of sophistication. But it is usually more an indication of self-absorbed immaturity.
It may seem more realistic to look at the world and to pay the most attention to all the sorrows and shortcomings. But that is not even half the picture.

Scientists have developed a once-a-day pill that they hope could potentially cure Alzheimer’s disease.
Tests in mice have shown the drug, PBT2, prevents build up of the amyloid protein linked to the disease.
Protein levels dropped by 60% within 24 hours of a single dose, and memory performance improved within five days.
A team from Australia’s Mental Health Research Institute of Victoria, who are behind the research, hope the drug could be on the market in four years.

July 23 (Bloomberg) — Novartis AG’s Gleevec cancer drug may harm patients’ hearts, researchers said after studying the product in mice and a small group of humans.
Gleevec, which can keep a form of the blood cancer leukemia in check, may cause congestive heart failure, the researchers said. Still, the scientists didn’t say patients should stop taking the treatment.
“The message is that patients need to stay on Gleevec,'’ said Thomas Force, the lead researcher and a doctor at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, in a telephone interview.

Certain eldercare health risks have been identified by the Seniorlink care advisors as predicting the need for careful eldercare planning - including confusion, memory loss, falling and appetite loss, among others. Although the process of aging can vary widely depending on each individual’s unique characteristics, some general themes help to explain the physical changes commonly seen in older people. For example, senses become less acute, muscle mass declines, flexibility decreases and reaction time slows down. Bodily organs also begin to decline, resulting in a gradual loss of function. Factors like genes, lifestyle and disease all influence the rate of these changes. Elders and their caregivers need to be aware of these. Read the rest of this entry »

Get it done
+++++++++++++++++++
Achievers concern themselves with excellence, but do not obsess over perfection. Things get done by doing them in the real world, not by putting them off until conditions are perfect.
In the time you spend worrying about whether or not to do something, it could have been done. In the time you spend worrying about whether it’s the perfect time to get going, you could already be far ahead.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Children with disabilities are more likely to live with a single woman _ whether she is a mother, grandmother or a female foster parent _ than other children, according to a new study.
The findings by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill indicate that organizations aimed at helping disabled children must also consider the particular problems faced by the single women who often care for them, said Philip Cohen, an associate professor of sociology at the university. FRIDAY, July 14 (HealthDay News) — A protein previously linked to the development of type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis may also be associated with asthma, a new study suggests.
Called aP2, the protein has no useful function in the body. It only appears during the course of disease, and seems to cause adverse effects on blood sugar levels and fatty acid metabolism. It previously has been found in fat cells and macrophages (a type of immune cell) in people with obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
