Sleeping with ALS
March 4th, 2006 by RespiteMatch.comMy wife at the time I began to decline was a great motivating factor to learn to sleep all night in one position. Let’s just say it wasn’t a pleasant experience when I required attention during the night. This is only possible to be comfortable all night for me by using a pillow top mattress, an alternating pressure pump mattress on top of that. For a pillow I use a cylinder piece of memory foam from www.foamorder.com The memory foam is a ten inch in diameter cylinder and five inches thick. After the foam arrives I have a four inch diameter circle cut completely through in the center of the foam to provide relief for my ear. The pillow case has a four inch diameter circle cut out of it also. The alternating pressure pump mattress is supplied by my home health supply company, which paid for by Medicare. An example of what I use http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4390222182&category=66734 Because saliva management is a problem, I use a series of cloth diapers and waterproof pad and let the saliva flow.
I hope this can help someone.
